Confucius Institute Scholarships

Scholarship Category and Application Requirement

The category of scholarship of 2016 includes Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Scholarship for One-Academic- Year Students and Scholarship for One-Semester Students and four-week-Scholorship.

Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens aged between 16 and 35 (Chinese language teachers shall be aged below 45).

Scholarship for One-Semester Students

The scholarship is provided to outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), outstanding performers on HSK, winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, Chinese language teachers worldwide, and outstanding students of Chinese language across the world. The scholarship winner may choose to study majors including Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy, as well as Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The time of entrance is September 2017 or March 2018 and the grant term is one semester. Applicants of Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine must have participated in HSK tests. Applicants of other majors must achieve a score of at least 210 on HSK (level 3) and have participated in HSKK test (elementary level).

Attention! This Category of scholarship will NOT be awarded to those who previously have studied in China.


Scholarship for One-Academic Year Students

The scholarship is provided to outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), outstanding performers on HSK, winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, Chinese language teachers worldwide, and outstanding graduates of Chinese language across the world, or those who intend to become Chinese teachers. The scholarship winner may choose to study majors including Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy.

The time of enrollment is autumn 2017 and the grant term is one academic year (approximately 11 months). Applicants of the major Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages must achieve a score of at least 270 on HSK (level 3) and a score of at least 60 on the HSKK (elementary level). Applicants of Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy need a minimum score of 180 on HSK 4 and 60 on HSKK Middle Level.

Those who are studying in China after January 1st. 2017 cannot apply for this type of CI scholarship!

Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages

The scholarship is provided to outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), outstanding performers on HSK exams, winners of the "Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, and outstanding graduates of Chinese language across the world for taking the MTCSOL degree. Applicants with specific teaching posts arranged will be given admission priority (certification by the institution he/she will teach for is required). Hanban will provide support for outstanding graduates to return to their countries to teach.

The scholarship winner shall begin the study in September 2017, and the grant will cover two academic years. After finishing the study, students will obtain the graduate diploma and be conferred with the Master’s degree certificate in MTCSOL. Applicants are required to have bachelor degrees or its equivalent with a score of at least 180 on the new HSK (level 5) and a score of at least 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate level) .

 

Applicants with HSK and HSKK scores will be given priority to all categories of scholarships. Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students in China shall arrange their applications in accordance with the prize specifications Repetitive applications are invalid.

Four-Week-Scholarship

Scholarship for Four-Weeks Students:The scholarship is oriented at excellent students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) with a priority of language study and supplemented with cultural study. The Courses open for application are: Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tai Chi, Chinese Language and Family Stay. The time of enrollment is July or December, 2017 for four weeks. Applicants need to take HSK exam and submit a score report, and also have no prior experience of studying in China.

Scholarship Coverage and Criteria

Scholarship winners are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with monthly living allowance, and comprehensive insurance for foreign students studying in China. Monthly living allowances are provided at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):

   a. CNY 2,500 for Bachelor’s Degree Students ,One-Academic-Year Students and One-Semester Students.

   b. CNY 3,000 for Master’s Degree Students.

The application for the Confucius-Institute-Scholarships is to be made in several steps:

Step 1
Please participate in HSK and HSKK tests. Test time in Confucius Institute in Vienna for 2017 please check here

Step 2
Please apply online at the website cis.chinese.cn. Create your own account and fill in the application form.

Step 3
Please send us the personally signed printout of the online submitted application form together with all application documents (see below) to the Confucius-Institute at the University of Vienna. Please contact the Confucius-Institute anytime, if you have questions.

Appraisal

The appraisal of the submission will be carried out by the Confucius-Institute at the University of Vienna. The results will be forwarded at Hanban or the Confucius-Institute-Centre, where the final choice is made.
 
The applicants can follow the procedure of the application and the results at their accounts online.

You will be notified about the results at least one month earlier before the enrollment!

Application documents

Applicants should log onto the Scholarship website, fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form”, and attach the electronic files of the following materials:


1. Photocopy of Passport Photo Page

2. Photocopy of New HSK Result Report

3. Notarized highest education diploma attained(scheduled graduation proof or official proof of student status).

4.Reference letter and letter of commitment. The BTCSOL Scholarship applicants should submit pre-admission notice issued by the host institutes designated by Hanban. The MTCSOL Scholarship applicants are required to submit two reference letters from professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English) and a written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation (written in Chinese and signed). College students majored in Chinese in countries with no Confucius Institutes established shall submit a reference letter signed and issued by the university President.

5.Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.

6.Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students in China shall submit the certificate of scholarship. Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions in their countries shall submit award proof and a reference letter from the Chinese Embassy (or Consulate) in the competition area.

7.Chinese language teachers shall submit the proof of the length of time in teaching and weekly teaching hours provided by institutes they work for.

8.Other materials required by host institutes.


Entrance and Annual Appraisal

 1.If the name on application is inconsistent with the name on the attached passport scanning file, or relevant certification material is incomplete, the application will be invalid.

2.If the scholarship winner cannot register for certain reason, he/she shall inform the host institute 15 days prior the registration day with a written explanation. Those who cannot complete registration without any reason, the scholarship qualification will not be remained and no longer have the qualification of applying the scholarship.

3.Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination.
