Confucius Institute Scholarships
In order to cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and talented students of Chinese language, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarships” program for providing sponsorship to students, scholars and Chinese language teachers of other countries for pursuing a study in relevant universities in China.

Scholarship Category and Application Requirement
The category of scholarship of 2018 includes Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Scholarship for One-Academic- Year Students and Scholarship for One-Semester Students and four-week-Scholorship.
Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens aged between 16 and 35 (Chinese language teachers shall be aged below 45).
Scholarship for One-Semester Students
The scholarship is provided to outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), outstanding performers on HSK, winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, Chinese language teachers worldwide, and outstanding students of Chinese language across the world. The scholarship winner may choose to study majors including Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy, as well as Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The time of entrance is September 2018 or March 2019 and the grant term is one semester. Applicants of Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine must have participated in HSK tests. Applicants of other majors must achieve a score of at least 210 on HSK (level 3) and have participated in HSKK test (elementary level).
Application deadlines are 20 June 2018 (winter semester) and 20 December 2018 (summer semester).
Attention! This Category of scholarship will NOT be awarded to those who previously have studied in China.
Scholarship for One-Academic Year Students
The scholarship is provided to outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), outstanding performers on HSK, winners of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, Chinese language teachers worldwide, and outstanding graduates of Chinese language across the world, or those who intend to become Chinese teachers. The scholarship winner may choose to study majors including Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy.
The time of enrollment is September 2018 and the grant term is one academic year (approximately 11 months). Applicants of Chinese Language must achieve a score of at least 180 on HSK (level 3). Applicants of the major Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages must achieve a score of at least 270 on HSK (level 3). Applicants of Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy need a minimum score of 180 on HSK 4 and 60 on HSKK Middle Level.
Application deadline is 20 June 2018.
Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages
The scholarship is provided to outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), outstanding performers on HSK exams, winners of the "Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, and outstanding graduates of Chinese language across the world for taking the MTCSOL degree. Applicants with specific teaching posts arranged will be given admission priority (certification by the institution he/she will teach for is required). Hanban will provide support for outstanding graduates to return to their countries to teach.
The scholarship winner shall begin the study in September 2018, and the grant will cover two academic years. After finishing the study, students will obtain the graduate diploma and be conferred with the Master’s degree certificate in MTCSOL. Applicants are required to have bachelor degrees or its equivalent with a score of at least 210 on the new HSK (level 5) and a score of at least 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate level) .

Scholarship Coverage and Criteria
Scholarship winners are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with monthly living allowance, and comprehensive insurance for foreign students studying in China. Monthly living allowances are provided at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):
a. CNY 2,500 for Bachelor’s Degree Students ,One-Academic-Year Students and One-Semester Students.
b. CNY 3,000 for Master’s Degree Students.
The application for the Confucius-Institute-Scholarships is to be made in several steps:
· Copy of the passport photo page
· Copy of the HSK and HSKK certificates
· Letter of recommendation from the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna
· Letter of motivation (800 Chinese characters)
· Highest graduation certificate, or a certified translation (English or Chinese)
Applicants for the MTCSOL Scholarship also need:
The MTCSOL Scholarship applicants are required to submit two reference letters from professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English) and a written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation (written in Chinese and signed).
For applicants under 18 years of age: Statement from the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) about the transfer of responsibility to a custodian in China.
Winners of the Chinese Bridge competition:
· Winner of the Austria final: Certificate and letter of recommendation from the competition organiser
· Winner of the China final: Scholarship certificate
Please send us the personally signed printout of the online submitted application form together with all application documents (see below) to the Confucius-Institute at the University of Vienna. Please contact the Confucius-Institute anytime, if you have questions.
The appraisal of the submission will be carried out by the Confucius-Institute at the University of Vienna. The results will be forwarded at Hanban or the Confucius-Institute-Centre, where the final choice is made.
The applicants can follow the procedure of the application and the results at their accounts online.
You will be notified about the results at least one month earlier before the enrollment!
Entrance and Annual Appraisal
1.If the name on application is inconsistent with the name on the attached passport scanning file, or relevant certification material is incomplete, the application will be invalid.
2.If the scholarship winner cannot register for certain reason, he/she shall inform the host institute 15 days prior the registration day with a written explanation. Those who cannot complete registration without any reason, the scholarship qualification will not be remained and no longer have the qualification of applying the scholarship.
3.Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination.
